Hey! I’m Shelby
So glad you’ve decided to stop by The Homespun Hive.
I am a wife and mother of two girls and one pup, we live in a small home in Southern California. We’ve got big plans to move out of state and build on a few acres but for now, this is where we’re at.
I met my husband Brian actually, in middle school! We got married in 2015 at a beautiful but small venue nestled in the mountains.
Brian is a huge inspiration in my life. He is the kind of guy who does things the right way, all the way through. Detail is so important to him and I strive to instill that aspect in myself as well.
In between homeschooling, meal planning and folding laundry, you can usually find me in our small vegetable garden tinkering with the plants and dirt. I am very passionate about being in tune with my body and teaching our kids to be the same way. I love learning about nutrition and natural healing, we are essential oil users and lovers of homeopathy.
Being outside is the best part of our day! The girls and I are almost always barefoot and covered with dirt. And if we aren’t inside then you can catch us reading some good books or doing art, lots of art! There is just something so special about homemade art hanging around the home or being gifted to others, don’t you think so too?
Here’s a little bit on why we choose to live simply and naturally:
Until meeting Brian, I pretty much ate the standard American diet. I struggled with mood issues and inflammation, itchy skin and scalp. But it never occurred to me to change my diet. Not that I knew where to begin anyways.
Brian’s mom is very health centered and into natural healing, and she introduced me into that world as well. She really taught me how to listen to my body and heed it’s warnings.
So, over time she educated me on healthy foods, good grains and dairy and emotional wellness.
Soon I started seeing a healing in myself. My moods were more stable, my pains were less severe and my skin was much calmer.
Since being married, Brian and I have dabbled in vegetarianism, veganism, living grain free/gluten and less toxic lives. And those times are when I have felt my best!
Upon the birth of our second daughter Cora, she shortly began experiencing severe eczema symptoms that plagued her day and night. The kind of eczema that itched and oozed, cracked, scabbed and bled. Her pediatrician had no real answers, only band aid solutions. That was not enough for us.
We started on a journey of eating 100% plant based, lots of freshly pressed juice, being corn/gluten/wheat/soy/canola oil free and low fats for 3 solid months. We started seeing a turn for the better with Cora. After about 8 months we started slowly adding things back in.
Through diet change and keeping ingredients clean and natural around the home PLUS working with a homeopathic practitioner we are finally seeing another huge change in her symptoms.
So what I am trying to say, is that we are learning to LISTEN to our bodies. And that listening has led us to a more simple and clean life. A life with less stress and more veggies. Its been a very hard journey but so worth it with the outcomes we’ve seen.
I hope to share here with you some tips and tricks I’ve learned along the way of my parenting journey and lots of yummy whole foods recipes that are nourishing for the whole family.
I aim to make life uncomplicated and practical but always with a side of play!
